Hello world with prgmr.com

For the Ryanair pledge site I was looking for some cheap, no nonsense hosting. I was recommended http://prgmr.com, took a look at it and was immediately taken with the reasonable cost and their attitude to their customers ("We don't assume you are stupid."). For a very reasonable $6 an month you get access to reasonably well resourced VPS. The downside is that you need to do a lot of config yourself, I didn't realise that the VPS comes without PHP, Apache or Mysql installed.

This was my process to get from new server to "Hello World" for Ubuntu server:
1) Go through the quickstart guide: http://book.xen.prgmr.com/mediawiki/index.php/Quickstart This was straightforward.
2) Install wget (told you it was barebones) sudo apt-get install wget
3) Enable the universe and multiverse repositories (follow "command line" section) http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-enable-the-universe-and-multiverse-repositories-in-ubuntu-804-hardy.html
5) You should now be good to go create an index.php in /var/www and see a "hello world"
